Venezuela’s crisis is no longer just a regional problem; its effects are increasingly felt across Europe. The country’s deep entanglement in organised crime and drug trafficking poses direct risks to Europe. Its alliances with Iran and Hezbollah, combined with this criminal activity, increase that threat to Europe. In the last 5 years more than 200,000 Venezuelan asylum seekers applied in the EU. The Venezuelan crisis is a stark reminder that events thousands of miles away can have immediate and tangible consequences for European stability and security. Although Venezuela is much closer to Europe than people often understand given its borders with EU Member States. Through Venezuela, Hezbollah is on Europe’s borders and this publication states that the EU must understand Venezuela as part of the geopolitical threat to Europe and act based on these realities.
